Brunström, M. & Carlberg, B. (2016). Effect of antihypertensive treatment at different blood pressure levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses, BMJ. 352, 17

The study investigates how blood pressure in people with diabetes can be treated.  The strength of the study is that it uses randomized control trials which make its findings more reliable. The main weakness of this study is that most of the participants in the trial had already been treated with different antihypertensive agents. This study is crucial for my research because it explores some of the new approaches nurses can use to handle diabetes comorbidities.

Grams, J., & Garvey, W. T. (2015). Weight loss and the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes using lifestyle therapy, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery: Mechanisms of action. Current Obesity Reports4(2), 287–302

This study is about weight loss-related several methods that can be used to control diabetes mellitus. The strength of the article is that it combines both lifestyle and biomedical weight loss methods. The weakness of the article lies in its narrow view of diabetes as a principally weight-related issue. The article supports my project as it contains crucial information that nurses can use to manage diabetes among people with weight issues.

Haw, J.S. & Galaviz, K. I (2017). Long-term sustainability of diabetes prevention approaches: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. JAMA Internal Medicine177 (12), 1808–1817

This study estimates the long-term effects of a wide variety of diabetes prevention strategies the prevalence of the disease. Its strengths lie in the use of randomized clinical trials that evaluated medical interventions and lifestyle modifications. However, the study has one major weakness. It heavily relied on secondary data. The study supports my project by providing alternative measures that nurses can use to improve the quality of life for patients with uncontrolled diabetes.

Kitabchi, A. E. (2009). Hyperglycemic crises in adult patients with diabetes. Diabetes Care. 32 (7), 1335–43.

This study focuses explicitly on hyperglycemia, one of the conditions that lead to the development of uncontrolled diabetes. It asserts diabetes will always develop into unchecked diabetes of hyperglycemia is not adequately managed. The strength of this article lies in its historical analysis of the issue, which provides credible evidence about the relationship between the improper management of hyperglycemia and development of uncontrolled diabetes. However, lack of enough primary data is the major weakness of the article. The article supports my project by providing historical evidence of that links improper management of hyperglycemia to development of uncontrolled diabetes.

Rother K.I. (2017). Diabetes treatment – bridging the divide. The New England Journal of Medicine356 (15), 1499–501

This study explores the different interventions and medications that can help in preventing diabetes mellitus from degenerating into uncontrolled diabetes. The strength of the articles is that it focuses more on lifestyle modifications than biomedical interventions. The study’s weaknesses lie in that there was no proper follow up that was conducted for the participants who were given medications. The study supports my research by proving that measures can be taken to ensure that diabetes mellitus can be managed to prevent from degenerating into the status of uncontrolled diabetes.

Umpierrez, G., & Pasquel, F. (2017). Management of inpatient hyperglycemia and diabetes in older adults. Diabetes Care, 40(4), 509–17

The study explores how hyperglycemia can be managed in older patients with diabetes to ensure to improve the quality of life. Its strength lies in that it reviews a wide range of literature and provides different perspectives on the issue. However, it is weak because it does not conduct any trial to collect primary data. The study is important for my project as it focuses on management of hyperglycemia, one of the conditions that lead to the development of uncontrolled diabetes.
