The focus of the current research report is to assess the replication and to test the extension of seminal research on the social perception phenomenon of the false consensus effect. The false consensus effect relates to the phenomenon that individuals tend to view their own personal behavioural choices and judgments as being the relative norm and acceptable when confronted with providing a percentage estimate of what they feel their peers would do in a set scenario, with the alternate view generally being perceived as uncommon, inappropriate or deviant to personal judgment.
The aim of this report is to assess if the false consensus effect can be replicated in the current PSY10 cohort.

Abstract

Method

Results
All necessary statistics will be provided to you on Moodle after data collection is complete. What you need to do in this section is: (1) report the relevant descriptive statistics (in text, Tables or Figures, or a combination of these); (2) identify the inferential statistical analyses that were performed and (3) report the relevant results in APA style. Within-groups comparison with descriptive statistics reported in text – Results were analysed with a paired samples t-test. As predicted, participants were significantly more accurate to recognise young adult (M = 1.16, SD = .68) than older adult faces (M = .92, SD = .58, t(55) = 2.76, p = .007). Between-groups comparison with descriptive statistics reported in a figure – An independent groups t-test indicated that participants who use Facebook for 20 hours a week or more reported significantly lower life satisfaction than participants who use Facebook for less than 20 hours a week, t(86) = 2.63, p = .010. This result was consistent with the hypothesis.
